Hearings scheduled on Illiana Expressway

GARY, Ind. — The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission has scheduled four public hearings on the proposed 47-mile Illiana Expressway that would link Interstate 65 in northwestern Indiana with I-55 in south suburban Chicago.

The Times of Munster reports the commission will conduct hearings in November in Gary, Lowell, Portage and Michigan City. In December, the panel's Transportation Policy Committee and its full board will vote on whether to approve the highway.

The full board must approve including the Illiana Expressway in its regional plan in order for the Indiana Department of Transportation to receive federal approval for its portion of the toll road.

The Indiana and Illinois departments of transportation announced last month they had reached an agreement on how to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the expressway.
