Much rejoicing for Carmel Catholic

Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team celebrated senior night, then three sets later, finally celebrated victory.

The Corsairs stayed hot Tuesday, rallying to beat visiting St. Viator 21-25, 25-6, 25-21 in East Suburban Catholic Conference action.

Carmel improved to 23-3 and 4-1 in the ESCC.

Morgan Meade had a busy night for the Corsairs, totaling 25 assists, 3 kills, 4 blocks and 3 digs. Carmel’s attack was led by Grace Schofield (7 kills, 3 blocks, 3 digs), Alyssa Armada (6 kills, 2 digs), Haley Nedelka (6 kills, 1 block) and Ellie Rengers (4 kills, 8 blocks). Other contributors to the win included Shauna Meagher (8 digs, 2 aces), Sierra Kepski (9 digs, 2 aces) and Elizabeth Tworek (8 digs).

After a slow start in the first set, Carmel battled back but it wasn’t enough to dig out of the hole it created. The Corsairs committed only one error — a serving error — in the second set, as their defense was almost flawless.

“The third was a battle,” Carmel coach David Pazely said.

Carmel trailed 5-1, pulled even at 14-14, went down 17-14, but again closed the gap and finished strong.

“It was great to see our team battle back against adversity from dropping the first set and trailing in the third,” Pazely said. “We kept our composure and were able to make some great defensive plays to win some key points.”
