32-year-old woman killed in crash near Maple Park

A 32-year-old woman from Cortland was killed Monday after a crash near Route 38 and Watson Road near Maple Park, authorities said.

Shanay Martin died from her injuries after she crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck, whose driver, a 35-year-old Maple Park man, was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Kane County sheriff’s office.

The crash occurred at about 11:50 a.m. Martin was heading west on Route 38 in a 2000 Mercury Marquis. Martin was nearing a line of cars that were stopped, waiting for someone to turn left, or south, onto Watson Road.

She tried to avoid the last car in the line and ended up crossing into oncoming traffic and was struck by a 1987 Chevy pickup truck that was headed east on Route 38, the sheriff’s office said.

“She went to the left into oncoming traffic instead of going right onto the shoulder,” Kane County sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.

Benjamin Frerichs, who was the driver of the pickup truck, was treated at Delnor Hospital in Geneva for injuries. Both drivers were the lone occupants of their respective vehicles, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash, which closed Route 38 between Meredith and Watson roads until about 2:30 p.m. while authorities investigated.
