DuPage Medical Group facility taking shape in Wheaton

The DuPage Medical Group facility being built in downtown Wheaton is expected to be a one-stop shop for patients when it opens next spring.

The three-story, 40,000-square-foot structure at the site of the former Jewel-Osco at Main Street and Willow Avenue will house family and internal medical practices currently based at the group's 1800 N. Main St. location.

Obstetrics and gynecologists and physical therapists also will have offices in the building as well as general X-ray, screening mammography and laboratory services.

“We believe the building will be unique for the area, housing primary care physicians and key ancillary medical services under one roof providing convenience for our patients,” spokeswoman Maria McGowan said.

Despite being a site that Mayor Michael Gresk called “difficult” because of its size and “unusual layout,” medical group officials said they scouted several locations and believe this one will meet their long-term needs.

“This site represented a good central location near downtown Wheaton that we felt would serve our practice well for years to come,” McGowan said. “In order to update our facility and infrastructure, a move to a new building was very appealing. Our doctors and staff could not be more excited about this new building and what it will represent to the community.”

All told, the project will move 25 primary care and obstetrics and gynecology physicians and the physical therapy department to the new location. But officials foresee more being added.

“We will be adding physicians to the building as we continue to grow to meet the needs of the community,” McGowan said.

Gresk said he believes the group will do very well at the new location. He also sees the project as an economic stimulus for the area that is also welcoming a new Mariano's Fresh Market and the Wheaton 121 luxury apartments.

“This will bode very well for our downtown and our planners are excited,” Gresk said. “Ideally it's dozens of new doctors and patients shopping and eating downtown who may have otherwise spent their dollars elsewhere.”
