Morton Arboretum

The following events and programs are offered at Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle. Activities are free with admission, unless noted. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors 65 and older, $9 for ages 2 to 17, free for younger children. On Wednesdays, admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for ages 2 to 17. Theatre hike:Mark Twain shares two of his famous stories, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and “The Diaries of Adam and Eve,” during Theatre-Hikes at 1 p.m. weekends in September. Busy bee: Children make a bee mask and find out what the buzz is all about in this self-guided activity from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends in September in the Children’s Garden.

Bike the arb: Ride your bike through the arboretum with interpretive stops and snack stations along the route from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 29. Cost: $10 members, $17 nonmembers. bike rentals available. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Fall festival: Enjoy fall colors during October along the Scarecrow Trail open 7 a.m. to sunset daily around Meadow Lake. Autumn fare including brats, build-your-own taffy apples and complimentary wine tastings available 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends in October and Columbus Day.

About candy: Children ages 3-5 find out which of their favorite sugary treats grow on trees and other plants and play some candy garden games from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 1, 9 and 10. Cost: $18 member child, $25 nonmember child. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Candy garden: Children ages 18-35 months find out what sweet treats grow on trees and other plants and play candy games from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Oct 2 and 8 in the Children’s Garden. Cost: $15 member child, $22 nonmembers. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Fall bird walks: Search for birds at the arboretum with an expert guide from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays, Oct. 5 and 19, Nov. 2 and 16, and Dec. 7. No experience necessary. Fall 5K: The 10th annual Fall Color 5K Run & Walk starts at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 and the Kid’s Dash for ages 2-10 at 9 a.m. Cost for 5K: $25 members, $30 nonmembers, or $35 race day; includes ChronoTrack B-Tag timing system, T-shirt, awards, and recovery food and water. Kid’s Dash: $10 members, $12 nonmembers, $15 race day; includes cotton T-shirt and participation ribbon. Register: mortonarb.org.

Jack O’Lantern hike: Take a family hike and explore the night life of owls, bats and spiders, then decorate pumpkins and roast marshmallows at 6, 6:15, 6:30, 6:45 and 7 p.m. Oct. 12, 13 and 19. Cost: $16 members, $19 nonmembers. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Glass workshops: Glass pumpkin workshops let students work with molten glass to create a glass pumpkin paperweight from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 to Oct. 18. Cost: $75 arboretum members, $89 nonmembers. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Smartphone photos: Learn the best ways to use your smartphone to capture attractive images from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19. Cost: $35 arboretum members, $42 nonmembers, including box lunch. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Glass pumpkins: The third annual Glass Pumpkin Patch is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 16 through Oct. 20. Viewing only Wednesday, Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Sales start 1 p.m. Friday and continue through the weekend.

Mosiac pumpkins: Create a three-dimensional pumpkin or plaque for Halloween or Thanksgiving from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20. Materials provided, plus bring your own buttons, beads or costume jewelry to add. Cost: $83 arboretum members, $98 nonmembers. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Story time: Gather for story time at 11 a.m. Fridays through Oct. 25 in the Children’s Garden amphitheater.

Curious naturalist: Learn age-appropriate techniques to engage curious naturalists from birth through elementary school from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. Cost: $72 arboretum members, $85 nonmembers. Register: mortonarb.org/education or (630) 719-2468.

Beneficial bats: Kids make a bat finger puppet and discover how bats are beneficial in this self-guided, hands-on activity from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in October in the Children’s Garden.

Trick or trees: Youngsters play tricky games, fashion fall crafts, plant a tree seed to take home and may purchase a small pumpkin from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends in the Children’s Garden.

Acorn Express: Climb on the Acorn Express, the arboretum’s open-air tram, to seek out fun destinations and to make a craft from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, through October. Cost: $4 member, $5 plus admission for others.

Family backpack: Go on an educational adventure by grabbing a backpack filled with science tools, guides and props from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through October in the Children’s Garden. Cost: $4 members, $5 nonmembers per backpack.

50 treasures: The Sterling Morton Library celebrates its golden anniversary with a “Tales and Treasures” exhibit showcasing 50 rare items from its collections through Dec. 28.
