Lake Zurich goes 5-0 at Hersey

Lake Zurich’s girls volleyball team continued its hot start to the season Saturday, getting contributions from several players in capturing the Hersey tournament with a 5-0 record.

Lake Zurich (15-2) did not lose a set.

Kiley McPeek led the Bears in kills with 27, while adding 30 digs, 6 aces and 6 blocks. Mallory Parsons (37 digs) and Allie McIlwain (6 blocks) each had 20 kills. Kristen Walding’s all-around performance included 127 assists, a team-best 18 blocks, 15 kills and 9 aces. Marta Tabaka served a squad-high 13 aces for Lake Zurich, which also received 18 kills from Sydney Glover, 113 digs from defensive ace Ashley Dina and 10 blocks from Mickenzie Andrews. Natalie Corrigan delivered 4 aces and 4 kills for the Bears, and Lexi Gora also had 4 kills.

Mundelein (7-10) took third place, going 2-3 with wins over Schaumburg and Glenbard North. Yasmeen Johnson’s team bests of 27 kills and 6 aces led the Mustangs. Sarah Bregenzer pounded 23 kills and served 5 aces, while Madi Wilcox dished out 72 assists on 278-of-281 setting.

At Wauconda: The host Bulldogs won their own tournament, going 5-0 to improve to 12-5 on the season.

Sara Sexton’s team-best 30 kills and 8 solo blocks helped Wauconda defeat Round Lake, North Chicago, Grayslake Central, Marengo and Lake Forest Academy. LeAnne Sakowicz and Susan Karhoff added 27 and 26 kills, respectively, while Ashley Anderson totaled 40 digs and 7 aces. Sakowicz (43 assists) and Karhoff (40 assists) ran the offense efficiently. Lauren Nee led the Bulldogs with 42 digs.

Becky Sidlowski chipped in 12 kills.

“All the girls contributed to our first-place finish,” Wauconda coach Alison Wiliams said. “We are proud of them for their consistency and teamwork. We hope to keep the momentum going into our next conference match (at Grant on Wednesday).”

Grayslake Central (14-6) was 4-1 on the day, picking up wins over Marengo, Round Lake, Lake Forest Academy and North Chicago.

Alex Dahlstrom had 30 kills for the Rams, whose other statistical leaders included Allie Daul (10 blocks), Hayley Peterson (73 assists) and Teresa Curtis (50 digs). Gabi Casper had 20 kills and 40 digs.

At St. Viator: Carmel Catholic capped its day by beating Elk Grove 25-15, 25-17 for third place.

Carmel (14-2) went 4-1 in the invite, losing only to eventual champ Keith Country Day 31-29, 25-22. Carmel started pool play by outlasting Elk Grove 25-18, 13-25, 15-11.

At Vernon Hills: Glenbrook North captured the Cougar Classic championship with a 5-0 mark.

The host Cougars went 1-4. Libertyville’s JV was 3-2 on the day.
