Man mistakenly released from jail captured in Carpentersville

A Chicago man serving a 12-year sentence at Stateville Correctional Center who was mistakenly released Monday from Cook County jail has been captured in Carpentersville.

Cook County sheriff's spokeswoman Cara Smith said 25-year-old Jeremiah Harris was captured Wednesday afternoon without incident. Smith said investigators were given information that led them to Carpentersville.

Smith said Harris was being held at Cook County jail awaiting trial in a 2008 murder case and for a possible probation violation in connection with a 2006 weapons case.

Harris was found not guilty in the murder case, and a judge terminated his probation in the weapons case.

Smith said the mistake was discovered Wednesday, when a judge alerted deputies to the error. It's the third such mistake at the jail this year.
