Wheaton man killed in I-94 Gurnee crash Sunday

An 18-year-old Wheaton man was killed following a crash on the Tri-State Tollway near Route 120 in Gurnee, authorities said.

Andrew Wilcox was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville after the crash Sunday, said Orlando Portillo of the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Wilcox died of multiple traumatic injuries, Portillo said. He added that tests indicated there was no sign of alcohol in Wilcox’s system.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Sergio Ortiz said the cause of the crash at 7:13 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 11 remains under investigation.

Ortiz said Wilcox and a passenger were eastbound on I-94 in a 2004 Nissan when the vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and into a fence.

Wilcox was in critical condition when he was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Condell.

The passenger suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
