Ko champ: BG sophomore first at Detweiller

Buffalo Grove sophomore Kaitlyn Ko ran to the individual title in 17:00 at the First to the Finish Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday.

Ko took first the previous weekend at the Fenton Invitational, and she continued to roll on Saturday, defeating Hinsdale Central freshman Alexa Haff (17:02) and Jacobs junior Lauren Van Vlierbergen (17:07).

Defending Class 3A state champions Naperville North showed no signs of slowing down, dominating the 27-team meet with an impressive 35 points.

The Huskies had five runners in the top 13 to easily top Hinsdale Central (81 points), Naperville Central (151), Wheaton Warrenville South (186), and Barrington (195).

Naperville North is tied with Glenbard West for the top spot in the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Poll.

Sophomore Katie Shannon (17:32), junior Elly DeTurris (17:40), senior Maria McDaniel (17:42), and freshman Claire Hamilton (17:47) went 4-7 for the Huskies.

Sophomore Ella Guppy (18:06) completed the scoring for Naperville North by taking 13th place.

Senior Caroline Reynolds (17:59) secured 10th place in powering Barrington’s fifth-place finish.

Junior Ayako Higuchi (17:59) took 11th place in pacing Fremd to 14th place. Buffalo Grove took 15th place.
