Rolling Meadows mayor recalls two notable citizens

Rolling Meadows Mayor Tom Rooney announced this week the recent deaths of two notable city residents, the pastor of a local congregation and a former alderman.

The Rev. Ronald Charles Juran served as pastor of Kingdom Life House of Prayer in Rolling Meadows.

“I will miss him sorely,” said Rooney, who noted that at Juran’s memorial service one of his daughter’s held up a rubber duck because her father always replied “just ducky” when asked how he was doing.

His obituary mentioned his sense of humor and the practical jokes he played.

Merton Staley served 10 years as Second Ward alderman beginning in 1995. He previously had served 17 years on the board of the Rolling Meadows Library.

“He was very conscientious and always took time to be fully prepared,” said Rooney, who served on the council with Staley.

Rooney said Staley believed having the Women in Need Growing Stronger (WINGS) shelter for victims of abuse established in Rolling Meadows was “his finest moment on the council, and I agree.”
