Elgin man pleads guilty to soliciting teen

A 24-year-old Elgin man pleaded guilty to soliciting a teenage boy he met online, court records show.

In exchange for Jeffrey Herold’s guilty plea to the misdemeanor solicitation charge, a Cook County judge sentenced him to 18 months probation and ordered him to serve 20 days in the Cook County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program.

A Hoffman Estates police officer found Herold and the 15-year-old Michigan boy about 3:45 a.m. July 9 in a vehicle parked in the Barrington Square Mall parking lot in Hoffman Estates. Prosecutors say Herold and the boy met for the first time in person just before the officer found them.
