FBI raids township offices in Pembroke

PEMBROKE, Ill. — The FBI has raided a township office in the Kankakee County community of Pembroke.

An agency spokesman tells The (Kankakee) Daily Journal that Thursday’s raid was part of “an ongoing investigation into corruption.”

FBI spokesman Brad Ware says the agency spent about four hours searching the property, but didn’t release other details.

Sharon White is the supervisor in the tiny township that’s one of the poorest in the Midwest. She says agents interviewed employees and seized financial documents after her own internal investigation showed more than $30,000 in cash withdrawals from various accounts during a single year.

Township attorney Jim Rowe says the community’s leaders requested the federal investigation.

A former township supervisor was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion.
