Tear gas fired to end 3-hour northern Indiana standoff

ELKHART, Ind. — Police in northern Indiana fired tear gas into an apartment to end a three-hour standoff and arrest a man who had skipped his trial on forgery and other charges.

Elkhart police went Wednesday night to the Washington Gardens Apartments with an arrest warrant for 25-year-old Delvon Tolbert.

Assistant Police Chief Laura Koch tells The Elkhart Truth that Tolbert locked himself in the apartment and refused to come out. Tolbert was arrested late Wednesday and no injuries were reported from the standoff.

A judge issued the arrest warrant after a jury convicted him Aug. 27 on felony charges of forgery, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property. He’s being held without bond in the Elkhart County Jail.
