Rockford considers disbanding city department

ROCKFORD — Officials in Rockford are debating whether to disband the city’s Human Services Department, folding its responsibilities into other city agencies.

The proposal comes as the city says it will repay nearly $300,000 to the federal government after an audit showed grant money was improperly documented.

The proposal comes from Mayor Larry Morrissey and City Administrator Jim Ryan.

The agency serves the homeless and some of the poorest residents in Winnebago and Boone counties.

It’s not clear how many of the department’s 101 jobs could be at risk.

Rockford’s City Council has the ultimate decision on the matter.
