Illinois officials to demonstrate photo speed checks

KANKAKEE — Illinois State Police and Department of Transportation officials will demonstrate photo speed enforcement for reporters Tuesday near Kankakee.

Authorities use photo speed enforcement in work zones when workers are present. Officials say as many as 8,000 crashes occur in work zones every year. Motorists are involved in more than 90 percent of fatalities in work zones.

The speed enforcement van will be on display just before deployment on Interstate 57 in Kankakee County.

The system is operated through a special van operated by a state trooper. The van has a speed indicator, allowing vehicles to slow.

Speeders trip the camera radar. A photo of the vehicle, driver and license plate is taken and a ticket arrives in the mail.
