Fests getting going as rain ends

Septemberfest in Schaumburg and Buffalo Grove Days both were under way late Saturday morning as the rain that produced a soggy start to the day ended.

The storms did force cancellation of some morning events on the long holiday weekend.

Victims of the weather included the 11 a.m. parade at the Elgin International Festival, the parade at the Lake in the Hills Summer Sunset Festival at Sunset Park, and the bed races at the Naperville Jaycees’ Last Fling.

Police evacuated Last Fling between 11 and 11:30, with people taking cover in their cars or the municipal center as a line of thunderstorms moved through.

While the bed races were a lost cause, Melissa Hupp, a member of the executive committee for special events at Last Fling, said plans for the family fest and carnival, if a little late, were still on.
