Boomers inch closer to playoff spot

Seth Webster won his fifth consecutive start, putting the host Schaumburg Boomers to the brink of a West Division title as they posted a 3-2 victory over the Frontier Greys on Thursday night.

Webster worked 8 innings, allowing just 2 runs with 4 strikeouts to improve to 6-1. The Boomers now own a magic number of 1 to secure their first playoff slot.

Michael Valadez opened the scoring with a two out, 2-run single in the fourth to score Sean Mahley and Frank Pfister. Gerard Hall extended the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Jordan Dean. Mahley posted 2 hits in the win.

The Boomers (55-35) will take to the road for a three-game weekend set with the Evansville Otters. Two of the top pitchers in the league tangle in the opener Friday at 6:35 p.m. with all-star right-hander Chris Phelan (6-2, 2.27) on the mound for the Boomers against left-hander Matt Zielinski (9-6, 3.51).
