Grayslake North notches win No. 1

Grayslake North’s boys soccer team earned its first win of the season Wednesday.

Senior Andreas Thedorf converted a game-tying penalty kick and the Knights prevailed in a penalty-kick shootout to edge Woodstock North 2-1 in Vernon Hills’ Cougar Classic.

Junior defender Lucas Buckels scored the game-winning kick in the shootout.

Keepers Travis Smith and Shane Boyd each made 5 saves for the Knights.

“Today’s game was a big step forward for our young group of boys,” Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. “We began playing with more purpose in our possession and created a fair amount of chances throughout the entirety of the match. While we created a number of good chances, the finishing touch was often just out of reach, or just missed.”

Stevenson 2, Mundelein 0: At Glenbrook South, Cesar Navarro and Sam Zwirn scored in the second half for the Patriots in their season opener.

Ethan Marx and Cobi Gilliam had assists. Stevenson goalie Jeremy Klaber made 3 saves in earning the shutout.

Warren 0, Niles North 0: At Glenbrook South, Warren got 4 saves from keeper R.J. Hill in its season opener.
