18-year-old murder suspect held without bond

An 18-year-old Chicago man is being held without bond in the death of a 33-year-old Iraq War veteran in a weekend robbery.

Devon Brunt is accused of shooting to death Telkia Burns during a robbery Sunday at his apartment in the South Chicago neighborhood. The 33-year-old Burns was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was declared dead about an hour later.

During a hearing Wednesday, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Bridget O’Brien said Brunt confronted Burns in the vestibule of his apartment building, demanding his property. She said Burns gave Brunt his watch, cellphone and cash. When Brunt demanded more, the Navy veteran resisted and was shot, she said.
