Rain causes shortage again for Wis. cow chip throw
SAUK CITY, Wis. — The annual cow chip throw festival in Sauk County is again dealing with a shortage.
The Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw and Festival attracts about 300 people who throw the flattened, dried cow manure — or cow chips — in Prairie du Sac, Wis.
Last year, the hot, dry summer caused the grass to brown and cattle to stay near their barn for food and to keep cool. That meant the manure in the pasture wasn’t able to dry and flatten in the sun.
This year, the wet spring dissolved the manure.
The event’s chairwoman, Marietta Reuter, says they have three barrels of reserve chips so the event Friday and Saturday will go on. But she says they need a normal year soon to replenish.
The event attracts 40,000 spectators.
