Elgin teen accused of swiping ATV arrested same day

A resident of the 200 block of Orchard Street reported to Elgin police that an ATV was stolen from a garage between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday.

It apparently didn’t take long to find the stolen vehicle, as police say Deondre J. Nance, 18, was spotted at 3:30 p.m. that day riding the ATV in the same area.

Police arrested Nance, of the 300 block of Billings Street, Elgin, and then picked up Esteban Ortiz, 17, of the 100 block of Jewett Street, Elgin, on Friday.

“They were working together. Information was developed on the other suspect, which lead us to Estaban,” said Elgin Police Lt. Sean Rafferty. “These (defendants) were out and about. It was a random search to steal stuff.”

Both teens face five counts of a burglary, a felony that carries a penalty of anywhere from probation to seven years in prison upon conviction.

At the time of his arrest, Nance was out on bond for felony criminal damage to property charges from an incident last month in Elgin, according to a court records.

He is now being held at the Kane County jail on $7,000 bond and due in court on Sept. 4.

Ortiz’ bond is $8,000 and he’s also due in court on Sept. 4.

Rafferty said police also may be looking for a third suspect.

Police are urging residents to lock their car doors, not to leave garage door openers in vehicles, to keep garage doors closed and doors locked at all times.
