Girl killed in Round Lake Beach crash a first-grader at Ellis School

School officials have confirmed a 6-year-old girl who died from injuries suffered Saturday in a two-vehicle crash in Round Lake Beach was a student at Round Lake Area Unit District 116.

Leyzle Artega, of Round Lake, was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. Saturday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. A District 116 spokeswoman said Leyzle was a first-grader at Raymond Ellis Elementary School.

In a news release, District 116 officials remembered Leyzle as a “sweet, beautiful girl who always worked hard (and) followed the rules.”

She was “friendly, caring, respectful and responsible,” according to the release.

Leyzle was one of two people hospitalized after a crash at 2:48 p.m. Saturday at Route 83 and Millstone Drive, authorities said. The girl suffered serious head injuries, Round Lake Beach police said in a news release.

There was no further information available Monday on the condition of the second person injured in the crash. Authorities said that person was riding in the same vehicle as Leyzle.

Round Lake Beach police said they and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team continue to investigate the crash and its cause.

A letter about Leyzle’s death was set to be sent to all Ellis students’ families Monday afternoon, District 116 officials said.

Social workers are available to students, their families and employees.
