Body found near route students take to school

Authorities say a body was found in garbage container located nearly a block from a route taken by Chicago children to their public school.

Police say the body was found early Monday by sanitation workers collecting garbage in Chicago’s Englewood community. Authorities would only say the body appeared be that of a man. They did not estimate his age nor describe his injuries.

Monday was the first day of school in Chicago. The body was found near one of the city’s Safe Passages routes. The designated route is one of hundreds created by the city to give children whose schools were shuttered last spring secure streets to their new schools. The routes are being heavily patrolled by Chicago police and parents.

Police officials said no incidents of trouble were reported.
