Kane County continues to investigate inmate’s death

Kane County authorities continue to investigate the death of a 52-year-old South Elgin woman found dead in her cell at the county jail Friday afternoon.

Terry A. Hart died as a result of asphyxiation by hanging, according to preliminary results of an autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner, Kane County sheriff’s police said.

The sheriff’s office said Hart had ben in jail custody since July 31. A week earlier, court records indicate, Hart had failed to appear for a scheduled court date while she was out on bond.

Court records show that following a trial earlier this month, a jury on Aug. 13 found Hart guilty of aggravated battery, and she had been remanded to the county jail while awaiting an Oct. 3 sentencing hearing.

An investigation into the death remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
