Sept. 11: CLC offers EKG screenings for students

On September 11, the Max Schewitz Foundation will return to College of Lake County with its Screens for Teens program, which provides free cardiac screening program to young adults. The event is being co-sponsored by the CLC Health Center. Up to 500 students ages 18-28 will receive a free heart screening including an EKG and, for certain students, an echocardiogram. The Schewitz Foundation’s mission is to identify young adults who are at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) before they are stricken.

Screens for Teens will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room C003. Register at www.maxandthewildthings.com at the College of Lake County link. Students who register will automatically be enrolled in a raffle to win one of two $50 CLC Bookstore gift cards.

“Every day, young people in America die of sudden cardiac arrest, from toddlers to college age,” said Michelle Grace, CLC director of Health Services. “You can’t help but ask, how many would be spared if their families, schools or sports organizations were aware of the benefits of cardiac screening for heart defects? Luckily, our students will have an opportunity to receive a free EKG from the Max Schewitz Foundation on Sept. 11. An EKG is a simple and painless test that checks for problems with the activity of your heart.”

Interpretation of all Screens for Teens EKGs is overseen by Dr. Eli Lavie of NorthShore University HealthSystems and Medical Director of the Max Schewitz Foundation. In 2005, Max Schewitz died suddenly and unexpectedly at age 20 from an undiagnosed cardiac condition. Like so many others victims of SCD, Schweitz had no previous medical conditions or warning signs. If he had been diagnosed, life-saving treatments could have been implemented. For more information about the Foundation, visit the Max Schewitz Foundation website at www.maxandthewildthings.com.
