Schedule for duck hunting season released

We can tell we’re getting close to autumn by the Illinois DNR announcement this week about the new duck hunting seasons.

The recommendations include 60-day duck seasons in each of the state’s four waterfowl hunting zones, along with Canada goose hunting seasons of 90 days in the North and Central zones, a 84-day Canada goose season in the South Central Zone and a 65-day Canada goose season in the South Zone.

The Illinois seasons are based on a five-year plan for waterfowl hunting season dates that was developed in 2011 and continues through the 2015 season. For 2013-14, Illinois will open the regular duck, Canada goose and snow goose seasons Oct. 19 in the North Zone, Oct. 26 in the Central Zone, Nov. 9 in the South Central Zone and Nov. 28 in the South Zone. White-fronted goose seasons open Nov. 4 in the North Zone, Nov. 19 in the Central and South Central zones, and Nov. 28 in the South Zone.

The proposed daily duck bag limit is six and may include no more than four mallards (two hens), three wood ducks, one mottled duck, two redheads, three scaup, two pintails, two canvasbacks and one black duck. The proposed daily bag limit of mergansers is five, and only two may be hooded mergansers. The possession limit for ducks and mergansers is three times the daily bag limit by species and sex.

Fishing update:Area lakes and ponds: In DuPage County, Deep Quarry has apparently come alive with excellent panfish angling. Mallard Lake good for largemouth. In Cook Co., Busse just fair with lower water levels. Lake County#146;s Independence Grove just fair for bass, better for bluegills.Fox Chain: Excellent white bass and crappie action on Pistakee Lake. Look for decent walleye action using trolled crankbaits on Channel Lake.Lake Michigan is good one day and just so-so the next. The best news is the 25-pound kings being taken off Waukegan.ŸContact Mike Jackson at angler88@comcast.net, and catch his radio show 6-7 a.m. Sundays on WSBC 1240-AM and live-streamed at www.mikejacksonoutdoors.com.
