Phelan solid, but Boomers get beaten

Despite collecting 11 hits and putting the tying runs on base in the ninth inning, the Schaumburg Boomers fell 4-1 to the Rockford Aviators at Boomers Stadium on Tuesday.

The Boomers (45-31), who are tied for first in the Frontier League’s West Division, had baserunners in eight of the nine innings but couldn’t produce a timely hit, finishing 1-for-15 with men in scoring position and stranding 13. The Boomers spoiled another quality start from all-star Chris Phelan, who worked 623 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits while suffering the loss. Sean Mahley drove home the lone Boomers run with an RBI single in the fifth.

The Boomers host the Aviators today at 6:30 p.m., sending right-hander Mike Giovenco (8-4, 3.55 ERA ) against righty Nick Anderson (4-7, 6.60).
