New trial date for Wauconda firefighter

A new trial date has been set for a Wauconda firefighter accused of sexually abusing a victim under the age of 13. The trial against Donald Berthiaume, 41, of the 2500 block of Fish Hook Way in Wauconda, will begin Oct. 15, with a new pretrial date set for Sept. 12 at the Lake County courthouse. Attorneys said in court Tuesday the trial was delayed due to evidence being exchanged. Berthiaume was charged with 12 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse after authorities accused him of having sexual contact with the minor from Aug. 1, 2004, through June 30, 2008. Berthiaume remains free after posting the required 10 percent of his $50,000 bail. He was placed on paid administrative leave from the Wauconda Fire Protection District following his arrest pending the outcome of the case.
