Holocaust survivors remembers parents with Torah

An 88-year-old Holocaust survivor is honoring her parents and those of her late husband by giving a $40,000 handwritten Torah she commissioned to a Skokie synagogue.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Sunday that Marge Fettman was 17 when she was separated from family members at the Auschwitz Nazi death camp. They died but she was spared.

The Torah, traditionally a handwritten scroll of the five Old Testament books of Moses, is the sacred Jewish text. Fettman’s donation was dedicated Sunday at Lubavitch Chabad (loo-BAH’-vich huh-BHAD’) of Skokie synagogue.

Rabbi Yochanan Posner (YOHK-huh-nan POHZ’-ner) says creating a traditional Torah is precise and laborious. A trained scribe can spend a year, full-time, perfectly crafting its 300,000 letters.

Fettman thanks God for giving her the idea and wants the Torah used for teaching.
