‘Man caves,’ handmade items are growing home trends

When it comes to what is in and what is out, the sky is the limit. Whatever makes you feel happy and comfortable is the best trend for you and your family.

With that said, let me give you a few thoughts on what designers see as notable styles these days.

Many men work out of their own homes, so those homes have been designed with a more sober feel in the furnishings — more useful than cute. Men who work at home are getting more involved in the decor, so you are bound to see more “man caves,” media rooms and perhaps some great wine rooms or in-home pubs in place of the traditional family room.

What’s wrong with going to the neighborhood pub each night without leaving your own home? The outdoor grill area will be more upscale and larger.

Repurposed furnishings and accessories are really in these days. Use a special object in a new way, or bring it into a common space so it can be seen or used more often. This also brings in the do-it-yourself element. Creativity is the key, both in repurposing and in do-it-yourself projects. Owners can take special pride in their finished projects, because the pieces have a special meaning.

What about patterns? Stripes are definitely in, and they mix well with just about any other pattern. Floral patterns are also back in style. They lend a romantic touch to a room and can bring on the feeling of perpetual holidays. Florals and stripes are always good together.

Brighter, saturated hues, brass metal and lacquer also have regained the popularity they held in the 1980s and ’90s. Gloss, shine, polish and lacquer are boldly taking a place in homes.

On the other side of the spectrum is the organic look with warm, modern materials. Things such as slate, crackle-glazed tiles and irregular floors — or anything that looks handmade — create a cozy, old-fashioned look.

What about the interior designer’s role? Today, the trend seems to be hiring teams of designers. One does the planning, another the lighting, and another the furnishings and accessories. All designers meet regularly to be sure everything goes smoothly and quickly and that all aspects are well coordinated and in sync.

So take your pick. What do you like for your home look?
