Mundelein police say they are seeking robbers who struck grocery store
Mundelein police are hunting for two men they say pulled off an armed robbery at a grocery store.
Police said the bandits struck Supermercado Vargas Grocery, 814 S. Lake St. Authorities were summoned to the store about 9:50 a.m. Friday.
Information provided to police indicates two Hispanic men, each with a handgun and dressed in dark clothing, entered the grocery and ordered employees and customers to the ground. Police said an unknown amount of cash was taken from the store.
Police said nearby residents gave statements suggesting the offenders fled on foot south from the store. Neither the employees nor customers were injured, according to police.
Authorities said one suspect was described as 5 feet 7 inches with a heavy build, dark complexion and 20 to 25 years old. Police said the other suspect is believed to be 5 feet 9 inches with a thin frame, medium complexion and 20 to 25 years old.
Deputy Police Chief Don Hansen said a Bannockburn Police Department canine unit and the Illinois State Police AirOne helicopter assisted in the suspect hunt. Hansen said the dog followed a track from Supermercado Vargas south from Route 45 to Ridge Avenue, but it ended at Pleasure Drive.
“As to why (the scent ended), the possibility is they got in a vehicle,” Hansen said.
The AirOne helicopter searched the residential area south of the store on the possibility the suspects were hiding, he said.
