Historical museum offers metal detector class

Have you ever found something that looked really old while gardening in your yard or while walking through the woods. If you have, then you’ve probably wondered how it got there, and what other fragments of our past might lie hidden just inches under the ground we walk.

The Arlington Heights Historical Museum is offering Exploring Our Past with a Metal Detector programs, one for kids and one for adults. Metal detectors will be available for class use, however, if you have one of your own, bring it to class.

The kids’ class is for grades 5-8 and meets from 9 a.m.-noon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12, 13 and 14. This class will start at the Museum, 110 W. Fremont, and some exploration will be off-site in the museum neighborhood.

The adult class begins Thursday, August 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Museum, 110 W. Fremont. An additional two days of the program will be determined by participants for time and locations of off-site exploration. Metal detectors will be available for use, however, if participants have one of their own, please bring to class.

Program instructor Mark Becker suggests that participants wear comfortable clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty and to bring a hat, utility gloves and wear sun screen.

Fee for the kids’ class and the adult class is $28. Register online at ahmuseum.org under the Classes and Programs tab. In person registration is available at any Arlington Heights Park District registration office. Call (847) 255-1225 for information.
