St. Matthew to host 23rd annual Pig Roast

St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School in Hawthorn Woods will host its 23rd Annual Pig Roast on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Food will be served from noon to 5 p.m. at the church on Old McHenry Road between Quentin and Midlothian roads. This “fest” is part of several events that have taken place during St. Matthew’ 150th anniversary year.

The event began when St. Matthew member John Knoll asked a small group of women who were working on the church’s annual chicken dinner if they might be interested in having a pig roast. What began with two pigs so many years ago has now grown to an event that attracts people from miles around.

Roasting 15 pigs, and serving nearly 2,000 guests in 2012, St. Matthew will again prepare and serve a meal of roast pork, German potato salad, baked beans, applesauce and hot, buttered sweet corn. Culver’s Ice Cream will be on the midway serving ice cream cones and turtle sundaes. Hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer will also be available for an additional cost.

The Alpiners will return to provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon. In addition to the great midway games, Balloon Master Bob Hirsch will entertain with his balloon creations. “Clowning Around,” starring Rick Colon, will also be on the midway with his comedy and magic, and there will be face painting and a spacewalk for children, and bingo.

Plan on a fun-filled afternoon, with delicious food, great entertainment and wonderful camaraderie. Admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children, ages 4-10. Children under 4 are free.
