Boomers edge ThunderBolts

The Schaumburg Boomers finished the longest homestand of the season with their third consecutive 1-run victory, earning a 4-3 decision over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Monday night to capture the season series.

Steve McQuail fisted a broken-bat single into left field to score Sean Mahley with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. The single marked the first time the Boomers (35-28) led in the matchup. Mahley had evened the game with a bloop double earlier in the inning.

Windy City opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of sacrifice flies from Mike Torres in the third and fifth. The Boomers tied the game for the first time in the bottom of the fifth, finally breaking through against Windy City starter Dyllon Nuernberg, who had not allowed a hit in the first 4 innings. Ty Nelson and Jordan Dean delivered back-to-back RBI singles.

Torres singled home another run in the seventh to hand the ThunderBolts another momentary edge.

Seth Webster posted his third consecutive no-decision for the Boomers, working a season-high 7 innings while allowing 3 runs on 8 hits. Reliever Preston Hatcher picked up the win by working the eighth. Adam Tollefson recorded the final out for the save.

The Boomers (35-28) are off today before hitting the road for a three-game series at Joliet beginning Wednesday. Right-hander Edwin Carl makes his first start for the Boomers opposing lefty Chuck Lofgren (5-4, 3.50).
