Boy struck and killed by truck on Oakton

A 4-year-old boy died Monday afternoon after the bike he was riding veered into traffic and he was struck by a semi in an unincorporated area near Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Village, police said.

The boy, who lived in Chicago, has not been identified. He was visiting relatives and had been riding a bike in a driveway on the 2200 block of Oakton Street just prior to the crash about 1:30 p.m., said Ben Breit, spokesman for the Cook County sheriff’s office.

A westbound truck pulling a 53-foot trailer struck the boy after he rode too close to the street, Breit said.

“It was nothing more than a tragic accident. Certainly nothing nefarious on the driver’s part,” Breit said. “It’s about as horrible of an accident as you can imagine.”

The driver of the truck stopped and attempted to assist the boy and his family, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the crash.

No citations are expected, Breit said.
