Baker, Cougars fall 5-1

Cubs pitcher Scott Baker made his third rehab start for the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday at Pohlman Field, but it wasn’t a happy result as the Cougars fell 5-1 loss to the host Beloit Snappers.

Baker (0-2) surrendered singles to the first two hitters he faced, but Daniel Robertson was caught stealing leaving only Aaron Shipman on the bases with two outs, but Renato Nunez put the Snappers (62-39, 19-12) on the board anyway as he blasted a 2-run homer to left.

Baker bounced back with a perfect second and nearly got through the third without allowing a baserunner, but Robertson doubled with two outs before scoring on a Chris Bostick hit up the score to 3-0. Baker walked the only man he faced in the fourth before exiting the contest.

Seth Streich (10-5) tossed 7 innings for the Snappers and didn’t let the Cougars (37-59, 7-23) get on base until the fifth when they loaded the bases on singles, but Oliver Zapata popped out to end the threat. Streich finally coughed up a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI double to Reggie Golden, bringing home Jeimer Candelario.
