Suspect in 2010 baseball bat attack pleads guilty

A woman has pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges in connection with a 2010 baseball bat attack in Chicago that hospitalized two women.

Marcy Cruz on Tuesday entered guilty pleas to two counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to 11 years in prison for each count. Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton says the sentences will be served consecutively. Cruz must serve 85 percent before being eligible for parole.

In entering the plea, the 28-year-old Cruz agreed to testify against co-defendant Heriberto Viramontes, who is charged with attempted murder.

Natasha McShane, a University of Illinois at Chicago student from Northern Ireland, and Stacy Jurich were the victims.

According to published reports, the 26-year-old McShane continues to struggle with health problems, including an inability to talk or walk.
