Ribfest security guard dies

A guard for the security company handling Ribfest felt ill while working the Saturday night of the festival and later died.

Carl Jones, 63, of Chicago, was transported to Edward Hospital where he died of a heart attack, said DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgenson.

“He just didn’t feel good and was sent to the hospital,” said Mary Beth Gerlach, vice president of business management for S3, Inc., known as Safety Service Systems — the company charged with providing security for the event.

He was a one-year employee of the company, she said.

“He was a good person and an excellent employee, a well-liked gentlemen,” Gerlach said. “It’s been a rough week.”

Jones had a history of cardiovascular disease, the coroner said.
