Auditions open for Battle of the Bands

Rock bands! Are you looking for a venue? Want to get your name and music “out there?” Audition for Battle of the Bands, taking place from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, in Schaumburg’s Town Square (corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads).

Chosen bands will perform outdoors by the Town Square pond, across the street from the Schaumburg Township District Library. In the event of rain, the competition will take place in the library’s Audiovisual Theatre. This annual event, sponsored by the library, draws hundreds of local teens and serves as a great opportunity for publicity.

Auditions are taking place until Tuesday, July 9. To be eligible to compete, band members must be 21 or younger and must be available at 5 p.m. on July 23, to set up their equipment. To audition, submit one MP3 song to stdlteens@gmail.com or submit a link to a website such as YouTube or Purevolume. For more information, contact the library’s teen staff at teen@stdl.org or call (847) 923-3240. There is no fee for participating or attending the band battle.

The popular Battle of the Bands is just one of many teen programs scheduled this summer. Others include the “Chicago Swordplay Guild Demonstration” from 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, July 11, in the library’s Rasmussen Room. Teens going into grade 7 and up, as well as adults, are invited to come and learn about the weapons and styles of sword fighting from representatives of the guild. Registration is required.

Teens ages 12-16 are invited to register for “Computer Animation with Shugo” from 1-3 p.m., Thursday, July 18, in Teen Place. Animator Shugo Tanaka will illustrate the basics of computer animation in this hands-on class. Another program for fans of anime is “Anime Night Extravaganza” from 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 1, in Teen Place. Teens going into grades 7 to 12 are welcome to enjoy a night of snacks and anime movies in the Teen Place Program Room. Registration is required.

For students in grades six through 12, “Self Defense Moves for Teens” will be held from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the Rasmussen Room. Black belt instructors from National Karate will teach self-defense moves during this interactive class. Upon registration, participants will receive an emailed waiver to bring to the event. Registration is required.
