Boomers fall 10-2 on road

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — An early 2-0 lead for the Schaumburg Boomers was not enough to hold off the Traverse City Beach Bums, who took the opener of the three-game series 10-2.

The Boomers scored 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning off Traverse City starter Scott Dunn. Brian McConkey blooped an RBI single into left field to score Chad Mozingo, the only Boomers batter to finish with multiple hits in the game.

A batter later, Sean Mahley added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Steve McQuail. From there, Dunn and Chris Squires shut down Schaumburg, holding the Boomers to just 1 hit from the fifth inning on.

Cody Griebling took his third loss of the season, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings of work.

Schaumburg will play game two Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park as right-hander Matt Kuna (2-0, 1.10) will square off against righty Jake Sabol (5-2, 1.69) for the Beach Bums. The Boomers open a six-game homestand Tuesday against the Southern Illinois Miners.
