If you’re going to dream, dream big

I think the Arlington Heights Village Board may have outdone themselves with a new concept called “pre-allocation.” As I understand it, you first identify a source of funds that you are never likely to receive. Then you pre-assign how you will spend such fantasy money.

It’s a great idea, but let’s go really big next time. Since it is rumored that the Cubs may move to the suburbs, let’s presume they will relocate to Arlington Heights. In anticipation of this why don’t we preallocate the new revenues we will receive toward world peace. Who could argue with that?

Come to think of it, pre-allocation is about what the state of Illinois has been doing for years except they call it budgeting.

Oh well, our public representatives have a big heart and mean well. It’s only the fulfillment of dreams that gives them trouble.
