One shot in failed Oakbrook Center robbery

One suspect was shot and Oak Brook police are searching for two others after an armed robbery attempt turned violent Sunday afternoon at a jewelry store in Oakbrook Center mall.

Police say the three men — one carrying a sledgehammer — entered C.D. Peacock about 3:40 p.m. The man with the hammer walked to the center of the store and smashed the top of a glass display case.

An armed store security confronted the man with the hammer while the other two suspects fled, police said. During the confrontation, the guard shot the suspect one time on the abdomen, according to police. When police arrived, officers found the suspect lying on the store's floor.

The other suspects left the mall heading west on 22nd Street in a black SUV-type vehicle, possibly a Jeep Liberty, police said.

Authorities are looking for two black males in their late 20s or early 30s. The first man is described as heavyset, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 230 pounds with a tattoo on the right side of his neck and wearing black T-shirt. The second man is 5 feet 11 inches tall and 160 pounds with a heavy beard and wearing a white T-shirt.

The injured suspect was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he underwent surgery and is under police guard.

Authorities continue to investigate the robbery and say they are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

Reports from shoppers indicate the mall was placed on lockdown for a brief time after the shooting.
