Lake Zurich board honors lacrosse state champs

Lake Zurich Mayor Thomas Poynton and village trustees honored Lake Zurich High School's state-champion boys lacrosse team Monday with a proclamation noting the “pride and respect” the squad's title brought the community.

After Poynton read the proclamation, elected officials, players and coaches gathered around the 2013 championship trophy to pose for photos.

It was another public thank-you to the team that received a short parade down Church Street in Lake Zurich and an assembly at the high school field house June 9. Launched in 2002, the boys lacrosse team captured its first Class B championship on June 1 by beating Naperville Central High School 13-6.

Head coach Chuck Vozas expressed his fondness for Lake Zurich on Monday before praising his players for more than their lacrosse prowess.

“We push the student-athlete first in them, that students are first and then athletes second,” Vozas said. “We want them to represent this fine city of Lake Zurich once they leave.”

A year after forming in 2002, the boys lacrosse team joined the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association. That was followed by the girls squad linking to the Illinois High School Women's Lacrosse Association in 2008, according to the village proclamation.

Lake Zurich has had boys and girls youth lacrosse programs since 2007 and 2008, respectively. Total boys and girls lacrosse participation has gone from 28 players in 2003 to more than 400 for the latest season.
