No charges in fatal Galesburg dog mauling

GALESBURG — Authorities say they won’t file charges in the mauling death of a 7-year-old Galesburg boy who was attacked by a dog in March.

Ryan Maxwell died shortly after he was bitten by the chained pit bull owned by family friends. The dog was killed by police.

Galesburg Police Sgt. Bob Schwartz tells The (Galesburg) Register-Mail that they couldn’t find a statute to apply to the attack, so no charges could be filed.

Maxwell had played with the dog before and the animal hadn’t been aggressive.

WSIL radio reports that a dedication ceremony was held this weekend for a tree and memorial garden behind Nielson Elementary School, where Maxwell attended.
