Carbon dioxide cartridge linked to Indiana blast

FOUNTAINTOWN, Ind. — Police in central Indiana say an explosion that injured a 12-year-old boy came from a carbon dioxide cartridge loaded with gunpowder.

The boy was injured Wednesday by the explosion near the rural community of Fountaintown. Hancock County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Bob Campbell tells WISH-TV that investigators didn’t know how the device went off.

The carbon dioxide cartridges are often used to power paintball guns and can be bought at many stores.

Campbell says the boy is expected to spend the next several days at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis recovering from his injuries.

Campbell says a decision hasn’t been made on whether anyone will face charges in the explosion. The boy’s father was at the home when the blast happened.
