Gary to hold Clay’s funeral at convention center

GARY, Ind. — The city of Gary is preparing for a funeral for former Mayor Rudy Clay.

Gary spokeswoman Chelsea Whittington says visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT Tuesday at the city’s Genesis Convention Center. The funeral will be held there at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Clay died Tuesday at the age of 77, two years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He became the Lake County party chairman in 2005, and Democratic Party leaders appointed him mayor the next year after Mayor Scott King abruptly resigned. Clay was elected to a full term in 2007.

Whittington says the Clay family and city officials decided to have the visitation and funeral at the convention center because the events might draw people from throughout Indiana.
