Wheaton Municipal Band announces 2013 summer concert series

The Wheaton Municipal Band, conducted by Dr. Bruce Moss, announces its 2013 summer concert series. Unless otherwise specified, concerts are Thursday nights at 8 p.m. in Memorial Park, 208 W. Union Ave., Wheaton, IL, 60187. Visit www.wheatonmunicipalband.org for more info.

June 6 - Season Opener–There's Nothing Like it UNDER THE STARS

Thursday 8 PM in Memorial Park

We feature Wheaton middle school band students in a side-by-side performance with the Wheaton Municipal Band of special literature for the occasion, plus wonderful marches, show tunes and an overture to kick off the season with the usual splendor! Our special guest for the side-by-side will be Wheaton composer Timothy Loest (sponsored by FJH Music Publishing Company).

June 13 - Verdi and Wagner Bicentennial!

Thursday 8 PM in Memorial Park

Overtures and operatic classics abound on the 200th birthday of these beloved composers. Students from Wheaton High Schools will join the WMB to perform Wagner's “Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral” and other favorites.

June 20 - WMB Plays the Midwest!

On December 22, 2012, the WMB performed for music leaders from around the world at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Tonight we share with our park audience several selections from that historic performance.

June 27 - CHILDREN'S CONCERT, and Happy Birthday to Happy Birthday!

Thursday 7:30 PM in Memorial Park

Come early for our instrument petting zoo where you can try out various musical instruments starting at 6:30 p.m. Then grab a seat for our children's concert at 7:30 p.m.

Our guest conductor is James Christensen, retired music director for Walt Disney Productions. Maestro Christenen is a renowned arranger and composer whose works are heard at theme parks around the world. Along with classic children's music and Disney tunes, you can count on singing “Happy Birthday” as well! Mildred J. Hill, who wrote the simple Happy Birthday tune, was a school teacher born in Louisville, Kentucky on this day, June 27, in 1859.

July 2 - Red White and Blue, Through and Through!

Tuesday 8 PM in Memorial Park

Lieutenant Commander Lorelei Conrad, US Navy Band, Retired, guest conductor. As one of our favorite annual concerts, this promises to be a spectacular display of patriotic pageantry!.

July 11 - Wheaton World Tour, Sample the Diversity

Thursday 8 PM in Memorial Park

A joint venture with the Wheaton Municipal Band and the Community Relations Commission. Join us for a spectacular visual, culinary and, or course, audible tour of the world cultures of Wheaton. Special activities will start at 6:00 pm.

July 18 - SHADES OF BLUE

Thursday 8 PM in Memorial Park

It's all “blue” in a concert featuring titles such as “Blue Tango”, “Blue Velvet”, “Blue Bells of Scotland”, “Who's Who in Navy Blue” and Frank Ticheli's popular “Blue Shades”.

July 25 - In Tribute to Our MENTORS

Thursday 8 PM in Memorial Park

Members of the WMB ask music educators who have impacted their lives to conduct or be with us in the audience at this special inspirational concert.

July 27 - Morton Gould: An AMERICAN SALUTE

Saturday 8 PM at Wheaton College Edman Chapel (This is not a function of Wheaton College).

FREE Admission, no tickets required.

We celebrate the centennial of the birth of legendary American composer and conductor Morton Gould with many of his favorite audience pleasers. Special guest Abby G. Burton joins us for stories of her father's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, his induction as one of the Kennedy Center Honorees, and his friendship with Benny Goodman (and other musical celebrities of the day)! MSgt Jay Niepoetter, United States Marine Band and alumnus of the Wheaton Municipal Band, joins us as special clarinet soloist.

August 1 - On the Spot Audience Favorites!

Social media and other forms of audience interaction will determine the selections for this program. Many selections performed won't be known by anyone (including the band!) until they are selected at the concert!
