Senate immigration plan needs support

Bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate would mean 11 million hardworking immigrants would get a shot at the American dream — at citizenship.

The current system is broken and that hurts all of us. The proposed legislation would fix and modernize our immigration system in a way that holds everyone accountable — employers, immigrants and government. Although the bill isn’t perfect, it is a major step in the right direction.

That’s why I’m confused and concerned that Sen. Mark Kirk hasn’t taken a position on this bill. Illinoisans support reform. Business leaders and union members, Republicans and Democrats all support reform.

Sitting on the sidelines isn’t an option. It is time for Sen. Kirk to take a stand and be on the right side of history — by supporting comprehensive immigration reform that includes a road map to citizenship.
