Cops on rooftops Friday for Special Olympics fundraiser

For the 11th year, hundreds of Illinois law enforcement officers will stake out Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, starting at 5 a.m. Friday, May 31.

Police officers have their own fundraising arm for Special Olympics, called the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“More than $1.3 million has been raised from this event over the last 10 years and we’re hoping to set new records this year,” said Eric Smith, Illinois Torch Run director and downstate Sherman, IL police chief. “It’s a wonderfully fun event that works.”

To meet their goal, police officers will have to top last year’s total of $240,000.

In return for the police officers “doing time” at their restaurants, Dunkin’ Donuts will donate $15,000 to the Torch Run fund. Each guest who visits a Cop on a Rooftop location and makes a donation to the Torch Run will get a free doughnut coupon; guests donating at least $10 will get a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug (while supplies last) and a coupon for free medium coffee. Other items, such as Torch Run T-shirts and hats, will be sold for various donations.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised nearly $25 million over 26 years. Each year, more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and to the State Summer Games in Normal in June.
