Poplar Creek Library hosts ‘America’s Music’

Poplar Creek Public Library has been awarded a grant to host a six-week program starting Wednesday, May 22, featuring documentary films and scholar-led discussions of 20th century American popular music.

The grant is funded through the National Endowment for the Humanities in collaboration with the Tribeca Film Institute and the American Library Association.

The program, “America’s Music,” is free and designed for a general audience. Paul Wertico, jazz drummer and assistant professor at Roosevelt University, will introduce genres of popular music, including blues and gospel, Broadway, jazz, country and bluegrass, rock, mambo and hip hop.

The film, short performance, and discussions will be held on six consecutive Wednesday evenings starting at 7 p.m. May 22. More popular films and performances by local children will be featured on additional dates.
